Throughout 2019 Lia Ghilardi has continued to work with the city of Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg) to develop cultural tourism opportunities together with a creative industries strategy. The city of Esch will be European Capital of Culture in 2022, but its image and reputation as a destination for experience tourism and related activities is relatively underdeveloped. Based on the mapping conducted by Lia between 2017 and 2018 (see Esch’s Cultural Strategy), she initiated a process of stakeholders’ engagement — with participants ranging from tourism to economic development, urban planning, creative clusters, education, retail and community development. Together they have co-created a Vision for where the city wants to be in 2030, and a road map for how this former industrial city in Luxembourg could capitalise on its strengths and creative capacity to become more attractive, cohesive and prosperous. The Vision and Road Map will be approved by the city government at the beginning of 2020.
